In a tournament where defending targets has been a nightmare, MI Emirates have managed to pull off three out of their four wins in such defences. And this one followed a very similar template: pulling the game back from a point where the opposition had their noses well ahead in the chase. The MIE Spirit of never giving up and constantly keeping the fight on saw another two points come home in this Abu Dhabi derby!
Proper team effort with the bat
Waseem: 37(36)
Bairstow: 38(16)
Banton: 38(28)
Pooran: 40(24)
Pollard: 28(16)
Everybody chipped in and made sure the scoring rate never dipped as MI Emirates finished on a strong 187/4 in their 20 overs.
Pulling it back from 96/1 in the 10th over
That’s where ADKR were at the halfway stage. With the asking rate nicely under control and nine wickets in hand, we needed something special to bring us back. And it came via Arab Gul, whose short delivery got the better of the set Alex Hales who holed out to long-on. The twist was enabled.
And Zahoor triggers the collapse
Just 56 runs came off the last ten overs in the ADKR innings. That’s the level of top bowling we are talking about here. Using the older ball to good effect, Zahoor Khan was the chief destructor, mixing up his change-of-pace deliveries perfectly, getting three big wickets – Sherfane Rutherford, Liam Livingstone and Sunil Narine – to carry us home comfortably in the end.
